Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20556323-complex-ptsd Notes: I found the insights and concepts introduced quite valuable, especially because it comes from a mental health professional who has the disorder as well. It provides both the clinician's perspective as well as how treatments affect patients. It also lists non clinic, non drug options for patients that can improve overall mental health. Cautions: Triggering as heck. I'd reccommend pacing it out. Perspective is often for those who who are able to leave abusers, which is not always an option. It's kinda hard on those with NPD, which is unfortunate for those with concurrent NPD and CPTSD. Tags: #Books #CPTSD #SelfHelp
The Little Book of Big Lies: A Journey into Inner Fitness by Tina Lifford https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60752829-the-little-book-of-big-lies Notes: A warm and kind general self improvement guide. If you can access it, go audiobook. Lifford shares her own life lessons, wisdom and kinder ways of speaking to oneself. Caution: She believes in a God so sometimes shares concepts that include God. If you're not a believer I think you'll still find a lot of good tips here. Tags: #Books #SelfHelp #SelfImprovement
The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18693771-the-body-keeps-the-score Notes: This book has insights about the APA and how it's in charge of the care of some of the most vulnerable people in society, and yet how frequently it fails them. Author also shares info about various non drug treatments that have the potential as tools to really help survivors. He's pretty compassionate towards survivors and advocates for looking at the causes of disorders instead of just focusing on fixing/inhibiting symptoms. Cautions: The author often describes abuse with little to no preamble or trigger warning. He also has compassion for abusers (as his patients), which can be hard to digest. While the book has info that people with CPTSD can use, it seems more geared towards professionals in the field and possible study funders. Tags: #Books #CPTSD #PTSD #SelfHelp
Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristin Neff https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38909167-self-compassion Notes: The concept put forth in this book is a great tool towards healing. I initially felt skepticism but understood the value as the author elaborated on the concept and cited the science. Cautions: The author describes treating her autistic son in ableist ways which I think would upset any child. If you're not up for reading this, the author has a website with many free guided meditations which are pretty solid to the best of my knowledge. Tags: #Books #SelfCompassion #SelfHelp (edited)
